ABOUT US

Grupo de Teatro Indigo

Grupo de Teatro Indigo is a Houston based Hispanic theater company founded by Eddie González and Domingo Banda in 2007, legally becoming a 501c non-profit organization in 2023.

Mission

The mission of Grupo de Teatro Indigo is to educate by preserving, presenting, and promoting Latino Culture through the performing, visual, and literary arts.

Vision

Our Vision is to bring inspiration and innovation to every community by using the arts as a medium to educate diverse cultures and traditions.

Grupo de Teatro Indigo (GTI) started in October 2007, when a group of

members of EPJ (Encounters of Youth Promotion), a Catholic movement of young adults that promotes leadership among the communities, got together to present a play called  “Índigo”, written by Eddie Gonzalez, to help the group raise funds for their annual retreat. Never knowing it was going to be the very first theatrical play we produced.

After noticing an attendance of more that 200 people at the event, they decided to continue doing other presentations to help other parishes, totaling two years (2007-2009) of presentations of “Indigo”.

Why are we named “Grupo de TeatroIndigo”?

The idea of naming the group came from the title of the first play that brought the group together, and some of the members have stayed since the beginning and are still participating in our productions. Indigo is a combination of deep blue and violet, and its meaning reflects great devotion, wisdom, and justice along with fairness and impartiality

A social message to our community

Entertaining hasn’t been the only goal and purpose of Grupo de Teatro Indigo, we decided that we could use theater to educate our community in different aspects, specially with different social issues that are hard to speak in public.

That is how we created plays like Abuso” (Abuse 2009) about domestic violence, rape and drug abuse; “Stigma zero positivo” (Stigma 2012) about HIV discrimination and how our community is misinformed; “Prejuicio” (Prejudice 2013) about homophobia and transphobia.  “Rosa es el amor en si” (2014), to promote breast cancer prevention; “La esposa que nunca fue” (The bride that never was 2009) to speak about mental health, and “Confesiones” (Confessions 2021) about women empowerment. Some of these have been presented several times.

Most of the work we presented are original; Eddie Gonzalez is the lead writer of the group, but have Sureya Mir and Gaby Salazar, who have written plays as well. We also have adapted some classic stories such as “Doña Barbara”.

On the stage we have experiences with musical, creating a short musical name “Será por que te amo”, and we have also work with several children’s plays.

The growth of Grupo de Teatro Indigo has been periodic, but after 16 years we can say we have our market or audience that are loyal to our shows.

When we started doing presentations, sometimes we had a small audience, but as we evolutionized, we can proudly say we have performed in front of thousands at Miller Outdoor Theater.

Grupo de Teatro Indigo went from presenting in small stages to larger stages and venues, always producing our own plays in every aspect. One example is the stage at MidTown Art Center, a black box theater, then Talento Bilingue de Houston, and now presenting at  Miller Outdoor Theater.

In these past years, Grupo de Teatro has expanded disciplines to work, and have produced, directed and written four seasons of the web series Flas Novelas, totaling 18 episodes. Several of these were presented in different conventions like National LatinX Conf on HIV, CDC, The United States Conference on HIV/AIDS (USCHA), in cities like Albuqeurque, Atlanta, Austin, Hollywood and Orlando, FL

We have also produced and directed a feature film adapting our play “Stigma Zero Positivo”, and we have written, directed and produced several Public Service Announcements, for FLAS, AIDS Foundation Houston, It’s Ok Not To Be Okay Campaign and others.

We have done radio with on-line station GQ radio with our show “Tercera Llamada”, where we talked about art and mental health.
